Not too shabby. Listening to T. REX, so it's impossible to be in a bad mood.
At first: what had once been the reason to change your name from THE LORD WEIRD SLOUGH FEG to just SLOUGH FEG?
I think the name of the band has always been SLOUGH FEG, really. The "Lord Weird" thing is just the unofficial extended version! We still make shirts sometimes that have the longer version name, so either one works. Half of the people who listen to us still call us THE LORD WEIRD SLOUGH FEG anyway.
You are often compared to bands like MANILLA ROAD, OMEN or BROCAS HELM just because you also play some kind of obscure und grumpy Metal instead of straight stuff like perhaps IRON MAIDEN or JUDAS PRIEST. What is your opinion relative to all these comparisons?
Grumpy metal. What a great term. I don't know. I personally think we sound more like MAIDEN or PRIEST than MANILLA ROAD or OMEN, at least these days, but I totally see the BROCAS HELM comparison. I guess it's the melodic folk influence mixed with a kind of frantic mood and those deep Bobby Wright vocals, who doesn't sound all that much unlike Mike. BROCAS HELM are the best Metal band in the U.S. as far as I'm concerned, so the comparisons are totally fine by me. I was quite giddy about having Bob Wright on the record.
In 2007 you had an album out called “Hardworlder”. And on your new record “The Animal Spirits” there is a song called “Heavyworlder”. Is this one some kind of sequel to “Hardworlder”? And what are other songs like “Trick The Vicar”, “Free Market Barbarian”, “Ask The Casket” or “Kon-Tiki” dealing with? They all have very strange titles…
I don't think "Heavyworlder" has anything to do thematically with "Hardworlder", it was just a cool way to tie the albums together. If I'm remembering right "Heavyworlder" is based on John Carter - that guy who was always ripping around Mars, starting wars and what not. "Trick The Vicar" is just based on a bunch of stupid/awesome jokes we came up with at the airport one day. It probably sounds like it should have deeper meaning than that - sorry. "Free Market Barbarian" is about the state of metal scene today. "Ask The Casket" was inspired by Mike's obsession with the old TV show "Dark Shadows". And "Kon-Tiki" is about Thor Heyerdahl and his zany adventures on the open seas in the 1940's.
Your singer and guitarist Mike Scalzi also played in a band called HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE where your former guitarist John Cobbett is still active. Rumours say that you are even connected to an American Black Metal-band called WEAKLING. Are these rumours true, and what is so fascinating about playing strange styles of music to you?
There's not any real connection musician-wise to WEAKLING that I can think of. The San Francisco metal scene is pretty incestuous, so I guess there could have been in the past, but nothing major. As for strange music... I don't know. You want to play something that challenges you, right? I'm not sure how strange I would even describe SLOUGH FEG as being. As far as metal goes, we're relatively traditional, at least from a songwriting perspective. It's just that not many people play like that anymore.
Until now you have rarely played shows in Germany. Is there perhaps a certain festival that you would like to play one time?
Well, we're playing "Headbangers Open Air" this Summer which is exciting. I've played exactly one show in Europe, and that was "Metal Merchants" in Norway next to last January, so I'm happy to do anything that gets me over there. Any festival will do.
What are your favourite records by now? Do you only listen to traditionally based Hard Rock- and Metal-stuff or also to other kinds of music?
Everyone in the band has pretty varied tastes in music I think. Obviously we all like a lot of the late 70's/early 80's heavy metal stuff, but you can't listen to that ALL the time. I'm really into T. REX at the moment as I mentioned and I'll listen to anything even vaguely Morrissey related. As for some newer stuff that I've liked... the new DAWNBRINGER album is pretty good. I like ATLANTEAN KODEX a lot. THE LAMP OF THOTH, ASOMVEL, HARBINGER. And there's those classics that are always in rotation like MERCYFUL FATE, TANK, GIRLSCHOOL, ANGEL WITCH, etc etc..
Do you have some special final words for your fans in Germany?
Yeah, everyone go spend money at that Viking bar in Berlin if it's still there. The one where they have a bunch of different kinds of mead. I'd be very unhappy if I got back there in July and it had closed down. Thank you.

Hi Leute, wie geht´s euch so?
Soweit gut, dank dir!
Ihr habt überall sehr positives Feedback auf euer letztes Album “Iron Will” erhalten. Habt ihr das jemals erwartet, da ihr doch eine Band seid, die von vielen Leuten noch dem Underground zugerechnet wird?
Seb: Wir wussten, dass wir auf “Iron Will” einen guten Job abgeliefert hatten, aber ehrlich gesagt wussten wir nicht, was wir erwarten sollten.
Fox: Wir haben auf jedes Album, das wir bisher veröffentlicht haben, sehr positives Feedback bekommen, so dass wir echt schon verwöhnt sind. Sogar unser erstes Album war “Album Des Monats” im Metal Hammer.
Nach vier Alben auf Rise Above Records, dem Label von CATHEDRAL-Sänger Lee Dorrian, habt ihr einen Deal mit Roadrunner Records erhalten, die hauptsächlich auf moderne Rock- und Metal-Bands fokussiert sind. Wie ist es zu diesem Vertrag gekommen?
Seb: Eigentlich waren da sogar einige Labels, die uns unter Vertrag nehmen wollten, und wir haben uns für Roadrunner entschieden. Wir wollten nach vier Alben bei Rise Above einfach einen Schritt weiter gehen.
Fox: Wir hatten eine großartige Zeit bei Rise Above, aber wir wollten sehen, was passieren kann, wenn wir unsere Musik über eine größere Plattenfirma mit anständiger Promotion verbreiten können.
Heutzutage wird der musikalische Stil von GRAND MAGUS oft mit DIO oder BLACK SABBATH im brillanten “Heaven & Hell”-Line-Up verglichen. Macht euch dieser Vergleich stolz? Und was sind die wirklichen musikalischen Einflüsse von GRAND MAGUS? Mögt ihr lieber Stoner Rock/Doom Metal oder den puren, traditionellen, eher JUDAS PRIEST/IRON MAIDEN-orientierten Stil?
Seb: Es macht uns nichts aus, wenn wir mit diesen genialen Bands verglichen werden, weil wir mit ihnen aufgewachsen sind. Ich weiß, dass J.B. und Fox lieber Black- und Death Metal als Stoner and Doom hören. Und wir alle drei hören ebenso auch eine Menge alten Hard Rock wie DEEP PURPLE und RAINBOW.
Fox: Das stimmt. Traditioneller Metal ist immer ein wichtiger Teil unseres musikalischen Lebens gewesen. Ich habe absolut genug von der Stoner/Doom-Szene. Es ist sehr selten, dass man neues Blut in dieser Szene sieht, und die meisten Bands klingen gleich.
Wo seht ihr persönlich die Unterschiede zwischen eurem neuen Album “Hammer Of The North” und eurer letzten Scheibe “Iron Will”? Meiner Meinung nach klingt “Iron Will” ein wenig schmutziger als "Hammer Of The North". Würdet ihr dem zustimmen, wenn man den Umstand bedenkt, dass ihr dieses Mal namhafte und erfahrene Leute wie Jens Bogren und Nico Elgstrand hattet, die das Album gemixt und produziert haben?
Seb: Wir waren auf dieses Album besser vorbereitet, und die Songs sind viel besser. Nico hat bei der Produktion einen exzellenten Job gemacht, und er hat uns alle wirklich ans Limit geführt. Und Bogren hat ebenso einen fantastischen Job erledigt.
Fox:Wir wollten einen natürlichen und kraftvollen Sound haben. Das ist eine ziemlich schwierige Kombination, aber ich denke, wir haben es hinbekommen.
Kann man “Hammer Of The North” als ein Konzeptalbum sehen? Wovon handelt beispielsweise ein Song wie “I, The Jury”? Und wie sind alle Songs mit dem "Wappentier" der Band, dem Wolf, verbunden?
Fox:Ich denke nicht, dass man es als Konzeptalbum bezeichnen kann, es ist nicht wie “Nostradamus” (das letzte, eher umstrittene als gefeierte Album von JUDAS PRIEST - Anm. d. Verf.). “I, The Jury” handelt davon, dass man sich sein eigenes Urteil bilden, seinen eigenen freien Willen einsetzen and nicht dummen Regeln von falschen Religionen folgen soll. Man hat nur dieses eine Leben, also sollte man das beste daraus machen. Der Wolf ist wie ein Symbol für Individualität und Stärke, wir mögen das!
Der Anfang und das Riff des Songs “Savage Tales” erinnern mich sehr stark an die Hymne “Princess Of The Night” von SAXON. War es eure Absicht, dass der Song eine Art Tribut an dieses alte Stück sein sollte?
Seb: Ich finde, es klingt mehr nach Michael Schenker als SAXON, haha! Aber “Princess Of The Night” ist trotzdem ein guter Song.
Fox: Ich habe nie daran gedacht, aber vielleicht hast du Recht. Ich werde das nächste Mal, wenn ich den Song höre, daran denken. Es war nicht unsere Absicht.
Habt ihr ein paar spezielle letzte Worte für eure Fans in Deutschland?
Seb: Wir sehen euch on the road! Stay Heavy!

You´ve received very positive feedback on your last album “Iron Will” everywhere. Have you ever expected this as you are a band that is still assigned to the underground for a lot of people?
Seb: We knew we did good on “Iron Will” but honestly we didn´t know what to expect.
Fox: We have received great feedback for every album we’ve made so we’re kind of spoiled. Even the first album was “Album Des Monats” in Metal Hammer.
After four albums on Rise Above Records, the label of CATHEDRAL-singer Lee Dorrian, you have finally received a deal with Roadrunner Records who are mostly focussed on modern Rock- and Metal-bands. How has it come to this contract?
Seb: Actually there were a couple of labels that wanted to sign us and we chose Roadrunner. We wanted to move on after four albums with Rise Above.
Fox: We had a great time at Rise Above but we wanted to see what could happen with spreading our music with a bigger record company with proper promotion.
Nowadays the musical style of GRAND MAGUS is often compared to DIO or BLACK SABBATH in the brilliant “Heaven & Hell”-line-up. Does this comparison make you proud? And what are the real musical influences of GRAND MAGUS? Do you rather like Stoner Rock/Doom Metal or the pure traditional, more JUDAS PRIEST/IRON MAIDEN-orientated style?
Seb: We don’t mind being compared to those brilliant bands cause we grew up listening to them. I know that J.B. and Fox are more into Black- and Death Metal than Stoner and Doom. And all the three of us listen to a lot of old Hard Rock like DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW as well.
Fox: That’s right. Traditional Metal has always been an important part of our musical life. I’m quite fed up with the Stoner/Doom-scene. It’s very seldom you see new blood in that scene, most of the bands sound the same.
Where do you personally see the differences between your new album “Hammer Of The North” and your last record “Iron Will”? In my opinion “Iron Will” sounds a little bit more dirty than the new one. Would you agree to that consulting the fact that you´ve had experienced and nameable people like Jens Bogren and Nico Elgstrand mixing and producing the album this time?
Seb: We were more prepared for this one and the songs are much better. Nico did an excellent job producing us and he really pushed us all to the limit. And Bogren did a fantastic job as well.
Fox: We wanted to get a natural and powerful sound. That is a quite hard combination but I think we made it.
Can you see “Hammer Of The North” as a concept-album? What does a song like “I, The Jury” deal with? And how are all the songs linked up with the band´s heraldic animal, the wolf?
Fox: I don’t think you can call it a concept album, it’s not like “Nostradamus”. “I, The Jury” deals with the thing that you have to be your own judge, use your free will and don’t follow stupid rules made up from false religions. You’ve got this life and you better make the best of it.
The wolf is like a symbol for individuality and strength, we like that!
The beginning and the riff of the song “Savage Tales” remind me very strongly of the hymn “Princess Of The Night” by SAXON. Have you intended this to be some kind of tribute to that old tune?
Seb: I think it sounds more Michael Schenker than SAXON, haha! But “Princess Of The Night” is a good tune though.
Fox: Never thought of that myself but maybe you´re right, have to keep that in mind next time I listen to it. It was not our intention.

Interview SKANNERS gibt es jetzt schon seit Anfang der 80er. Trotzdem seit ihr beim breiten Metal-Publikum nicht so bekannt. Stellt euch mal kurz selbst vor.
Wir haben uns im Jahre 1982 gegründet. Vier Jahre später brachten uns unser Debütalbum „Dirty Armada“ über den Vertrieb CGD MMI auf den Markt - unseren bis dato größten Erfolg erreichten wir nach der Veröffentlichung unserer zweiten LP „Pictures Of War“ (1988), als wir auf große Supporttour mit namhaften Bands wie Motörhead, Halloween, Saxon, Manowar, Dio und Twisted Sister gingen.
Daraufhin folgte eine längere Serie von Auftritten in Norditalien. 1995 wurde der dritte Langspieler „The Magic Square“ auf den Markt gebracht. 1996 konnten wir einen weiteren großen Sprung hinlegen, indem wir als Special Guest für die Hard Rocker von Deep Purple bei deren Italien-Tour auftreten konnten. 1997 feierten wir unser 15-jähriges Bandjubiläum und bescherten unsere Fans mit einem Livealbum, unser viertes Output.
Die folgenden Jahre wurde es ruhiger um die Band, bis dann 2002 unter neuer Labelflagge (Underground Symphony) unser fünftes Album erschien. Allerdings wurde es, wie auch alle anderen Veröffentlichungen, nur in Italien vertrieben.
Das Jahr 2006 wurde zu unserem endgültigen Comebackjahr. Über das Label My Graveyard Productions wurden gleich zwei geschichtsträchtige Alben auf die Welt losgelassen: „Dirty Armada“ und „Pictures Of War“. Zwei Jahre später veröffentlichten wir dann „The Serial Healer“, welches nun auch europaweit in den Läden steht.
Wie ist denn euer Status in eurer Heimat. Geht da metalmäßig viel?
In Italien werden wir als Kultband bezeichnet. Wir sind eine der ersten Heavy Metal gewesen und sind Bezugspunkt für neue Bands. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Bands der 80er Jahre, die sich wieder zusammenschließen nachdem sie sich aufgelöst hatten, sind wir immer aktiv geblieben, auch in den Jahren 92 bis 97, den dunklen Zeiten des Heavy Metal (zumindest was Italien anbelangt)…sicherlich ist Italien was HM angeht nicht Deutschland, jedoch in letzter Zeit gibt es steigendes Interesse.
Bei uns hat vor allem italienischer Pop Vorrang – HM lässt die Geldmühle nicht so schnell drehen! Italienische Metaller sind stark auslandsorientiert und unterstützen ausländische Bands mehr als inländische.
Mit "Factory Of Steel" habt ihr ja richtig gute Ware am Start - jetzt auch über ein größeres Label. Wie kommt den das Feedback?
Momentan ist es noch zu früh, um Bilanz zu ziehen….am meisten freut uns, dass das neue Album in ganz Europa sehr gut ankommt. Wir hoffen, dass wir es live promoten können!!
Was sind denn euren Faves auf "Factory Of Steel"? Welche Bands (alte und heutige) beeinflussen euch denn da?
Meine persönlichen Faves sind der Title Track„Factory Of Steel“ und „Rock The Nation“ – jene die am meisten angehört werden sind auch „Hard and Pure“ und „Iron Man“! Da wir in den 80er Jahren geboren sind, werden wir am meisten von SAXON und JUDAS PRIEST aber auch von RUNNING WILD, SCORPIONS, ACCEPT sowie SINNER und momentan von PRIMAL FEAR beeinflusst.
Wie sind die Re-Releases eurer älteren Alben angekommen?
Momentan gibt es europaweit - durch SAOL released – unser vorletztes Album THE SERIAL HEALER. Wir hoffen, dass wir all unsere Werke wieder herausgeben können – wir werden ja sehen, ob dies möglich ist…..
Nur mit SKANNERS wird euer Lebensunterhalt nicht zu bestreiten sein. Was macht ihr sonst noch?
Ja so ist es. Drei von uns sind Musiker, sie spielen bei SKANNERS und sind Musiklehrer und Sessionsmusiker. Ich bin öffentlich Bediensteter (Funktechniker) und Claudio hat einen Bestattungsdienst …. Er ist ein echter undertaker ha ha ha!
Was läuft zur Zeit? Habt ihr irgendwelche Pläne - Tour, neue Songs? Was können wir von euch in Zukunft erwarten?
Wir möchten das Album vor allem live in Europa promoten, da wir live am stärksten sind. Wir haben dabei folgende Konzerte gebucht:

in Vicenza (I) am 30.Apirl im Sabotage
in Torgau am 09.Juli IN FLAMMEN OPEN AIR
