Danke, uns geht es großartig im Moment! Wir haben darauf gewartet, dass unser neues Album erscheint, aber jetzt hat das Warten endlich ein Ende, und wir sind froh darüber, dass es soweit ist.

Der Bandname MITHRAS geht zurück auf einen römischen Gott, der seine Wurzeln in der persischen Kultur hat, soweit ich richtig informiert bin. Warum habt Ihr Euch ausgerechnet dafür entschieden? Was verbindet die Band mit diesen Teilen der Geschichte?

Nun, der Bandname wurde in Anlehnung an die Geschichte und die "Bedeutung" des römischen Gottes Mithras ausgewählt. Interessanterweise meinen viele Leute, dass seine Geschichte ähnlich der Geschichte Jesu sei, und es gibt sogar Leute, die der Überzeugung sind, dass Jesus und Mithras ein und dieselbe Person seien. Der Gott Mithras war der Gott des Lichtes, und Leon und ich glauben, dass sich der Mensch zum Licht hin- und von der Dunkelheit wegbewegen sollte. Er war, wie Du sagst, ein römischer Gott, und zu der Zeit, als wir den Bandnamen auswählten, beschäftigten wir uns viel mit römischer Thematik, wie man auch an unserem "Forever Advancing Legions...."-Album erkennen kann. Das war einfach ein Teil des Beginns der Band und ihrer Geschichte. Wir hatten mit der Band schon immer ein Konzept und eine Story verbunden, die auch alle Alben miteinander verknüpft.

Die Band wurde bereits 1998 gegründet, aber es scheint, dass Ihr noch nicht sehr bekannt innerhalb der extremen Metal-Szene seid. Was denkt Ihr, mag der Grund dafür sein?

Wir haben über die Jahre sehr viel Ärger mit anderen Bandmitgliedern gehabt. Leon (Gitarren/Drums) und ich bestreiten die Band alleine, das hat wohl dazu geführt, dass wir nicht viele Gigs oder Touren bestreiten konnten, was vielleicht ein Faktor ist. Außerdem sind wir eine Band, die "von nirgendwo" aus UK kommt, denn die meisten bekannten Bands aus UK stammen aus London oder anderen großen Städten. Darum denke ich, dass uns diese Tatsache etwas Raum verschafft hat, zuerst einmal ohne große Aufmerksamkeit zu wachsen. Ein anderer Grund ist vielleicht, dass wir eine Menge Zeit vor unserem ersten Album "...Legions" damit verstreichen ließen, zu schreiben, üben und neue Mitglieder zu finden, bevor wir auch nur annähernd in die Nähe des Rampenlichtes rücken konnten. Wir sind immer von Zeitverschwendern in der Band behindert worden, und darum sind jetzt nur noch Leon und ich übrig! Wie auch immer... wir hoffen, in der Zukunft ein paar Live-Gigs mit Session-Musikern abspulen zu können, die uns helfen, unser Profil ein wenig aufzupolieren, aber das steht noch nicht zu 100% fest.

Woher bezieht Ihr Eure musikalischen Einflüsse? Der Stil von MITHRAS erinnert mich ein wenig an Bands wie VADER, MORBID ANGEL, DEATH oder HATE ETERNAL. Kommt Ihr aus dieser Richtung?

Ich finde diese Frage immer schwierig zu beantworten. Ich höre von vielen Leuten, dass wir stark von MORBID ANGEL beeinflusst seien, was ich aber nicht unbedingt sehe, aber wie viele extreme Bands sind das heutzutage nicht?! Wir hören viele Bands, viele extreme, aber auch experimentelle, Folk, klassische, Prog und alle anderen Bands, die uns positiv oder negativ beeinflussen. Bei MITHRAS erzeugt sich die Musik von selbst, sie wird gesät und wächst und wächst. Wir bringen in jeden Part unsere eigenen Ideen ein, und dann entsteht der komplette Song. Ein Song ist nie eher fertig, bevor er auf dem Album steht.

Euer letztes Album "Worlds Beyond The Veil" ist bereits vier Jahre alt. Warum hat es so lange gedauert, das neue Werk "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness" fertig zu stellen?

Das letzte Album wurde bis 2004 einfach nicht ordentlich veröffentlicht, darum ist es erst drei Jahre alt, haha! Wir haben nach "Worlds..." eine Weile Pause gemacht. Wir hatten MITHRAS zuvor seit sechs Jahren am Laufen, und zu dieser Zeit waren wir einfach so müde, dass wir diese Pause einfach brauchten, obwohl wir sogar einen Major-Plattenvertrag hatten. Außerdem mussten wir ein paar private Angelegenheiten klären. Uns haben dann auch wieder ein paar neue Bandmitglieder zurückgeworfen, die nach "Worlds..." in die Band gekommen waren. Am Ende blieben nur Leon und ich übrig, das neue Album fertig zu stellen, genauso wie es auch mit "Worlds..." gelaufen war. Leon musste Zeit aufwenden, sich die Drum-Parts für "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness" anzueignen, weil sie nicht gerade Standard sind. Das hat viel Zeit gekostet und uns wieder mal im Zeitplan nach hinten geschoben. Aber nach all dem lief es echt gut, als wir erst einmal so weit waren, es aufzunehmen.

Was genau bedeutet der Albumtitel? Steckt dahinter ein komplexes Konzept?

Ja, denn wie bei allen bisherigen MITHRAS-Alben wird auch hier die Story vom vorigen Album "Worlds Beyond The Veil" auf "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness" fortgeführt. Diese Story begann schon auf unserem ersten Album "Forever Advancing Legions" und ist seitdem immer weiter erzählt worden. "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness" folgt einer Story, in der der Hauptcharakter seinen Verstand behält, solange er sich in dem Teil seiner Welt befindet, der von der Sonne erhellt ist. Aber falls er sich in die Dunkelheit begibt, wird er dem Wahnsinn verfallen und die Monster werden frei. Es ist ein wenig komplizierter als das, aber das ist die Grundidee, die wir mit dem Albumtitel herüberbringen wollten.

Das Cover-Artwork scheint von Dan Seagrave designt worden zu sein, jedenfalls sieht es so aus, als sei er dafür verantwortlich. Mögt Ihr seine Artworks?

Ja, das ist von ihm! Seine Arbeiten sind zweifelsohne fantastisch! Er war absolut professionell, setzte unsere Ideen sehr gut um und baute noch seine eigenen Ideen mit ein, darum war es ein Vergnügen, mit ihm zu arbeiten. Wir sind echt begeistert von der Arbeit, die dem Feeling und der Aussage des Albums noch die Krone aufsetzt.

Habt Ihr jemals in Deutschland getourt? Und falls nicht, plant Ihr etwas in dieser Richtung für nächstes Jahr?

Ich selbst war noch nie auf Tour in Deutschland, auch wenn ich das sehr gerne würde! Leon war mit einer Band namens THRONE OF NAILS in Deutschland unterwegs, die dort ein paar Gigs gespielt haben. Wir haben bis jetzt noch keine Pläne, zu Euch zu kommen, aber hoffentlich bald!

We´re great at the moment, thanks, we have been waiting for the new album to come out, but finally the wait is over and we are very glad it is.

The band name MITHRAS goes back to the name of a Roman god with it´s roots in the Persian culture as I have informed myself. Why did you exacty choose that? What connects the band to these parts of history?

Well, the band name was chosen due to the history and "meanings" behind the Roman god Mithras; interestingly some claim his story to be very similar to the story of Jesus, in fact some even believe that Mithras and Jesus are one unto the same. The god Mithras was the god of light, both Leon and I believe that man should strive towards the light and therefore away from darkness. He was as you say a Roman god and at the time of choosing the band name we had a lot of Roman themed links as can be seen on the "Forever Advancing Legions...." album, so it was part of the beginning of the band and its story. We have always had a concept and story within the band which has kept the albums linked together.

The band has already been formed in 1998, but it seems that you are still not so well-known in the extreme metal-scene. What do you think might be the reason for this?

We have had a lot of trouble with other members over the years, Leon (guitars/drums) and I do it on our own, so this has led to us not being able to do many gigs or tours which could be a factor. Also we are a band that "came from nowhere" in the UK, most of the major UK bands come from London or other major cities, so I think it gave us room to grow at first without being noticed as much. Another reason may have been that we did spend a lot of time before our first album "...Legions" writing and playing and practicing and trying to find other members, before we even stepped into or anywhere near the limelight. We have always been hindered by time wasters in the band, this is why it has ended up with just me and Leon. However, we are hoping to do some live gigs with session musicians in the future to help raise our profile, but that is not 100% confirmed yet.

Where do you get your musical influences from? The style of MITHRAS reminds me a little bit of bands like VADER, MORBID ANGEL, DEATH or HATE ETERNAL. Is this the direction you come from?

I always find this a hard question to answer, I hear a lot of people say we are influenced by Morbid Angel a lot, which I don´t see that much of and, how many extreme bands nowadays aren´t? We listen to a lot of bands, lots of extreme, experimental, folk, classical, prog, (and all the rest) bands which influence us in a positive or negative way. In MITHRAS the music creates itself, it starts from a seed and grows and grows, we add our own take on parts and it transforms into the complete song, a song is never finished until it is out on an album.

Your last album "Worlds Beyond The Veil" is already four years old. Why has it taken so long to finish your new record "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness"?

It actually wasn´t released properly until 2004 so it´s only 3 years old, hehe. We took a break for a while after "Worlds..." as we had been doing MITHRAS solidly for 6 years, and by that time though we had got a major record contract we were so tired we needed to take a break, and also sort out some private matters. Another setback was that again we were let down by new members who joined after "Worlds...", and we were left with just Leon and I again to do the new album (exactly as was the case with "Worlds..."). Leon had to spend time learning and training for the drum parts on "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness", as they were not easy by any standard, this took time, and again put us back. But with that said, once we were able to get on with recording it, it went quite well.

What does the album-title mean exactly? Is there a complex concept behind it?

Yes! As with all MITHRAS albums so far, "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness" continues from the previous album "Worlds Beyond The Veil". The story started right at the start of our first album "Forever Advancing Legions" and has continued throughout. "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness" follows a story whereby if the main character in the story stays within the part of his world illuminated by the sun he will retain his sanity, but if he wanders into the darkness he will be lost to madness and the monsters therein, basically. It´s obviously a bit more complicated than that, but that was the condensed idea we were trying to get across with the album title.

The cover-artwork seems to be created by Dan Seagrave, anyway it looks as if he has done it. Do you like his Artworks?

It certainly is he! His work is unmistakebly fantastic. He was so professional and worked off the ideas we had so well, also adding his own, which made it a pleasure to work with him. We were highly delighted with the piece which added so much to the feel and effect of the album.

Have you ever toured in Germany? And if not, are you planning going on tour here next year?

I have not been on tour in Germany although I would love to go. Leon has been on tour with a band called THRONE OF NAILS which played a few gigs in Germany. We haven´t as yet got any plans to tour Germany but hopefully soon!
