Lars: Alright... I definitely think the German saying
contains some amount of truth, though maybe it´s more appropriate to use
it in terms of developing something physical like buildings or a good
wine. I think it takes about a day to make a really really good song if
you´re inspired! "Velvet Noise" our first record from 2002 had about
four very old tunes on it but the rest of them were put together about
two weeks before and during the recording, based on a few musical ideas
here and there. It´s a fact that RAUNCHY´s background of basically
growing up together being a band since 8th grade, has brought us close
together as a team in terms of song writing. If for example a guitar
player comes up with a good riff or some chords, the others are
instantly inspired and know what to do, most of the time. All of the
music out on "Confusion Bay" was made in two months or so, simply
because our drummer lived in an other part of the country up until two
months before we entered the studio. But even then, I didn´t have time
to show up in the rehearsal room for different reasons. As result I had
to write lyrics and melodies for 11 songs while recording the album
within the two weeks of studio time. Luckily I received enough
inspiration from the tunes alone to get it all down in time! And yeah.
We´re all insanely proud of the turn out.

You´ve been in studio once again with your first producer who
even produced your demos. Why did you choose him in the end and not Ross
Robinson?

Lars: Ross actually wanted to sign us to his I AM label
but didn´t really know about our deal with NB. That was the only
problem. We´re still in contact and who knows? Maybe a future
co-operation!! Jacob Hansen is a great fucking producer though and good
company as well. We had loads of fun recording with him again.

All of you six in RAUNCHY (starring the two guitar players Lars
Christensen and Jesper Andreas Tilstedt, bass player Jesper Kvist,
keyboarder Jeppe Christensen and drummer Morten Toft Hansen besides Lars
Vognstrup) are listening to a wide bunch of music ranging from grindcore
to the swing of the famous Rat Pack. And you don´t really hide your
various influences in your own music. What pushed you most in the last
few years?

Lars: Yeah that is a bit funny actually. Now I didn´t
really contribute to very much of the music making but took all the
vocal work on my shoulders instead. I have my own smaller or bigger
influences that the other guys don´t even know about. Like a sweedish
indie band called YVONNE or some old 60´iesish garage bands, NICK CAVE
AND THE BAD SEEDS, THE FALL and even some new and old electronic stuff.
While they may listen to music that´s more in the brutal end of the
scale, stuff that I´ve never heard of. Which is cool though cause they
mostly like what I´m putting down on a new track and vice versa. If
there would be any all together references that we´d all agree with it
probably would be FAITH NO MORE and METALLICA!

What band should never be played when all of you six are
together, for example in the tour bus?

Lars: BLACK EYED PEAS or MANOWAR

Let´s pretend so called NuMetal is dead. At least, since KORN´s
"Untouchables" flopped. Who cares?

Lars: Ross Robinson probably, and I guess Mike Patton
will be happy if the kids stop mentioning him as
their influence... Most Americans.

Did you kick it off? Right after you came out with "Velvet
Noise" MNEMIC were signed to Nuclear Blast as well. Is there a kind of
Danish scene?

Lars: I think we brought some attention and spotlight
on Denmark when nobody knew that there actually was a metal scene
because there kind of is. MNEMIC is a fucking tight band and they will
probably go far. What do I know?

You played last year´s legendary Wacken Open Air. Did you meet a
legend/idol from your childhood times?

Lars: We saw SLAYER back stage. Didn´t meet them
though.

What was it like? Or did you feel like killing your idols right
on the spot?

Lars: I got so drunk at that festival that I´m lucky I
didn´t kill myself... We are pretty non violent towards people

Finally your planning to go on tour outside of Denmark. What
tour would you realisticly like to jump on? Re-united FEAR
FACTORY?

Lars: I imagine a tour with another NB band like IN
FLAMES or SOILWORK wouldn´t be too unrealistic. But there´s nothing
confirmed yet.

But suddenly...

a little note on the news-board of ICS (the booking company of RAUNCHY)
popped up, telling that a planned tour had to be cancelled because the
band is searching for a new singer. No need to say that this needed
further inquisition: It´s a hoax, isn´t it?

Lars: Wow... It´s been a fact for a long time, even
pre-"Confusion Bay", but we wanted to hold back the news. I´m just too
busy with my other band that is somewhat different style wise and in the
expression. I love RAUNCHY but I think they´ll be better off without
someone who can´t do it a 100%. I need to have the other thing going on
the side and I´ve known that there would be a time to choose. Well I´ve
chosen but it´s strange!! They are pretty sad about it but they already
found someone who can pull it off live. I feel evil and sad but it´s
cool. Maybe Ill do a couple of songs on the next record anyway and
appear as a guest on some concerts.

Nobody is mad at each other. I´m glad.

Lars: An dem Sprichwort ist schon etwas wahres dran
- auch wenn es sicher eher bei gutem Wein oder klassischen Gebäuden
passt als bei uns. Wenn man gerade die Inspiration hat, braucht man
maximal einen Tag um einen geilen, wirklich guten Song zu schreiben. Auf
unserem ersten Album waren, glaub´ ich, vier ältere Songs, aber die
anderen haben wir in nicht mal zwei Wochen kurz vor und während der
Aufnahmen gebastelt, zu denen wir bis dahin nur ein paar wage Ideen
hatten. Wir sind alle zusammen aufgewachsen, die Band gibt es in dieser
Form seit der achten Klasse. In punkto Songwriting sind wir ein blind
aufeinander eingespieltes Team: Wenn zum Beispiel einer der Gitarristen
mit einem Riff oder ein paar Akkorden ankommt, reagieren die anderen
meistens sofort und greifen die Idee auf. Die Musik zu "Confusion Bay"
hatten wir in zwei Monaten fertig. Es blieb uns auch nichts anderes
übrig: Unser Schlagzeuger hatte bis zwei Monate vor unserem Studiotermin
in einem anderen Landesteil von Dänemark gelebt. Ich hatte es bis dahin
noch nicht mal bis in unseren Proberaum geschafft - aus anderen Gründen
allerdings. Selbst schuld, also musste ich während der zwei Wochen im
Studio Texte schreiben und mir Gesangsmelodien für elf Songs ausdenken.
Zum Glück haben mir die anderen mit den halbfertigen Songs genug
Anregungen geliefert, so dass ich es rechtzeitig fertig bekommen habe.
Ach ja: Wie sind alle ganz verrückt stolz auf das Ergebnis!

Ihr wart wieder mit demselben Produzenten im Studio, der euch
schon seit euren Demo-Zeiten aufnimmt. Im Vorfeld konnte man Gerüchte
hören, Erfolgsproduzent Ross Robinson (kümmert sich momentan um die
Newcomer Glassjaw und Amen, hat Millionenseller mit Slipknot, Limp
Bizkit, Machine Head und Korn produziert) sei ganz wild auf RAUNCHY.
Warum ist aus der Kooperation nichts geworden?

Lars: Ross wollte uns in erster Linie fest an sein I AM
Label binden, ihm war nicht klar, dass wir mit Nuclear Blast schon einen
Plattenvertrag haben. Das war das einzige Problem. Aber wir haben noch
immer Kontakt - also schauen wir mal, was da in der Zukunft draus
wird... Aber Jacob Hansen ist ein großartiger Produzent, und es ist
lustig, mit ihm abzuhängen. Wir hatten wirklich viel Spaß bei den
Aufnahmen.

Wenn man euren Steckbriefen auf der Homepage glauben kann, hört
ihr sechs (außer Lars Vognstrup sind das die Gitarristen Lars
Christensen und Jesper Andreas Tilstedt, Bassist Jesper Kvist,
Keyboarder Jeppe Christensen und Schlagzeuger Morten Toft Hansen) eine
Bandbreite an Musik von den extremen Polen Grindcore bis Swing, die in
mancher Wohnung das Regal sprengen würde. Und ihr versteckt eure
Einflüsse nicht gerade. Was hat euch in den letzten Jahren alle zusammen
am meisten gepackt?

Lars: Stimmt, das ist witzig. Aber ich schreibe nur die
Gesangslinien, am eigentlichen Songwriting bin ich nicht beteiligt. Ich
höre noch ganz andere Sachen von denen die anderen noch nicht mal ahnen.
Wie etwa die süüße schwedische Independent-Band YVONNE, einige
Garagenbands im Sixties-Stil oder NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS. Oder THE
FALL, und ich höre gern älteren und neueren Electronic-Kram.
Währenddessen hören die anderen Bands vom brutaleren Ende der Skala, von
denen ich noch nicht mal den Namen kenne. Trotzdem ist das cool, denn
meistens mögen sie, was ich mir einfallen lasse - und umgekehrt. Unser
kleinster gemeinsamer Nenner sind wahrscheinlich FAITH NO MORE und
METALLICA.

Welche Band dürfte denn nie und nimmer ins Kassettendeck von
eurem Tourbus?

Lars: BLACK EYED PEAS. Und MANOWAR.

Was wäre wenn New Metal jetzt tatsächlich tot ist, also
spätestens seitdem KORN ihr vorletztes Album "Untouchables" haben
floppen lassen. Kratzt das wen?

Lars: Vielleicht Ross Robinson? Mike Patton wäre
wahrscheinlich froh, wenn die dummen Kinder endlich aufhören, ihn als
Vorbild zu nennen. Die meisten Amerikaner würde es stören.

Ihr seid schuld, denn ihr wart die ersten: Ziemlich schnell nach
euch haben auch MNEMIC bei Nuclear Blast einen Plattenvertrag bekommen.
Gibt so etwas wie eine Szene in Dänemark?

Lars: Ich denke, wir haben die Aufmerksamkeit auf
Dänemark gelenkt, als niemand dachte, das hier in Sachen Metal was zu
holen ist. Denn es gibt hier so was wie eine Metal-Szene. MNEMIC sind
eine verdammt geile Band, die jetzt wirklich durchstarten. Aber was weiß
ich schon.

Letztes Jahr habt ihr auf dem legendären Wacken Open Air
gespielt. Habt ihr irgendwelche Idole eurer Jugend getroffen?

Lars: Wir haben SLAYER von weitem im Backstage gesehen.
Aber leider nicht mit ihnen gesprochen oder so was.

Nach diesem Album wollt ihr endlich auch außerhalb von Dänemark
oder Festivals auf die Bühnen klettern. Habt ihr da eine Band im Auge,
mit der ihr gern auf Tour gehen würdet? Die wiedervereinigten FEAR
FACTORY vielleicht?

Lars: Vielleicht ist eine Tour mit IN FLAMES oder
SOILWORK gar nicht mal so unrealistisch. Aber da gibt es noch nichts
konkretes.

Und dann war da noch...

...eine kleine Notiz auf der Homepage von ICS, der Booking-Company von
RAUNCHY: "Die Tour von RAUNCHY ist gecancelt, weil die Band einen neuen
Sänger sucht." Natürlich habe ich daraufhin noch einmal nachgefragt: Das
ist doch eine Ente, oder?

Lars: Ohh... Eigentlich wollten wir das noch ein bisschen für uns
behalten. Für uns stand das schon fest, bevor wir für "Confusion Bay"
ins Studio gegangen sind. Ich habe einfach viel zu viel mit meiner
anderen Band zu tun. Mit der mache ich was ganz anderes, einen völlig
anderen Stil. Ich liebe RAUNCHY, aber ich denke, die Band kommt weiter
mit jemandem, der den Job 100-prozentig macht. Ich brauche mein anderes
Projekt, um mich ausdrücken zu können, und wir wussten allesamt schon
sehr lange, dass ich mich irgendwann entscheiden muss. Nun habe ich mich
entschieden, und es ist seltsam. Die anderen bedauern das ziemlich, aber
sie haben jemanden gefunden, der es live bringt. Und selbst ich bin
traurig und fühle mich ein bisschen wie der Böse, aber es ist auch cool,
das es raus ist. Vielleicht kann ich trotzdem noch ein paar Songs zum
nächsten Album beitragen, oder als Gast auf die Bühne springen, wenn sie
mich lassen. Zum Glück verstehen wir uns trotzdem noch - und darüber bin
ich froh!
