SKUM

Staub – das ist traditionell alles, was das Kölner Frontgeschütz SKUM von den Brettern übrig lässt. Seit mehr als 13 Jahren zieht es Metalheads weit über das Rheinland hinaus zu den legendären Gigs, die einer ungebremsten Abrissbirne gleichen. Höchste Zeit also, die Masse mit einem neuen Werk auf die nächsten Live-Dates vorzubereiten. Nach zwei Full-Length-Alben (2004 bzw. 2008) und einer Promo (2010) wird der dritte Longplayer im Februar 2013 das Licht der Welt erblicken und – ganz im Sinne des Quartetts – abermals nichts als Prašina (dt. „Staub“) hinterlassen. Kein Wunder, dass man sich im Hause SKUM gleich dazu entschloss, dem neuen Kind mit „Prašina“ den passenden Namen zu geben.

SKUM-Frontmann und Texter Nikola bleibt seiner Linie treu und verbindet persönliche Texte in zumeist englischer Sprache mit deutschen sowie kroatischen Akzenten – ein etabliertes Erkennungsmerkmal, das angesichts splitternder Brecher wie „Kolos“ oder „Brandrodung“ selten besser funktionierte. Und auch musikalisch liefern SKUM 2013 wie gewohnt ab. Death Metal - das steht auf den zerfetzten Flaggen, die im Hagelsturm des neuen Sounds flattern. Doch grooviger Blast, treibende, morbide Melodien und das satte Paar Eier charakterisieren „Prašina“ gleichermaßen wie die altbekannte Portion Rock 'n' Roll und brachiale Thrash-Attacken wie aus dem Lehrbuch. Differenzierter, bratender Sound sorgt für die Gleichberechtigung des Einzelnen und die imposante Daseinsberechtigung des Ganzen. Wer SKUM noch nicht auf dem Zettel hatte, sollte schleunigst den Stift zücken und notieren: SKUM, Prašina, Februar 2013!

Dust – that’s typically everything left over when Cologne-based war machine SKUM gets off the stage. For more than 13 years, metalheads from far beyond the Rhine region have traveled to the band’s legendary gigs to experience an unleashing of power that rivals a wrecking ball at full speed. Now it’s about time to announce a new album in order to prepare the audience for the next tour. After two full-length albums (released in 2004 and 2008, respectively) and a promo release (2010), the third LP will reduce the surroundings to dust once again, as could be expected from the four-piece. As such, it doesn’t come as a surprise that SKUM chose to christen their latest release correspondingly and call it “Prašina”: the Croation word for “dust”, and a truly appropriate name.

SKUM band leader and songwriter Nikola remains true to his style, blending personal lyrics (mostly sung in English) with German and Croation accents ­ – a well-established distinguishing feature that has rarely been used to better effect than in smashers like “Kolos” or “Brandrodung” (slash-and-burn). Musically, SKUM deliver as always, too. Death Metal is emblazoned on the band’s banners that fly proudly in the hailstorm unleashed by the new sound. However, groovy blast passages and morbid melodies as well as a cocky attitude are equally characteristic of “Prašina” as a healthy dose of good old Rock’n'Roll and brutal thrash attacks right out of the textbook. A well-differentiated, yet massive sound not only does all the individual elements justice, but also adds an imposing presence to the whole. So if you haven’t made a note of SKUM yet, it’s about time to take out pen & paper and jot down: SKUM, Prašina, February 2013!
