Band:

Spellbound

BiografieWhen David Maier and Kai Lohwasser met through a annunciation in the RockHard magazine in summer 1998, none of them thought that this would be the foundation of a straightforward thrash metal band. They´ve been playing together already in a melodic death metal band namely TEARS OF SADNESS from Konstanz, together with some musicians that now belong to the band MEDUSA. But Dave and Kai didn´t want to make slow, melancholic sound, and so they founded their own band SPELLBOUND in a sudden. The lineup was completed with Lennart Vocke and Daniel Tschoepe – Spellbound was born.

The style of music, which the four guys from the south of Germany intended to play, became clear after the first few rehearsal sessions already: Diversified thrash, with some old school elements based on those famous Bay Area bands, but with bits of Black Metal and with catchy-melodic Power Metal riffs, which you can hear on their 2 track demo ‘First Contact’ from 1999. After a few experiments Lennart took over the microphone, and David concentrated fully on playing guitar from that point on. A year later (the band had several problems finding a good rehearsal room) the 4 track demo ‘Extensions’ followed, on which you can hear that thrash elements are much more dominant now, and it almost doesn’t contain any Black Metal or Death Metal elements anymore. After this recording the band split up, because some private things caused conflicts within the band. David and Lennart checked some other bands in the meantime, but couldn’t find appropriate musicians. Only Daniel was still actively making music, founding the Death Metal band INFERNAL RISING, where he also was responsible for the vocals.

Almost 2 years passed by after the split, when David called the former Spellbound members, for just „jamming“ around a bit for fun. The opportunity was there: INFERNAL RISING had split up, because Oliver Grbavac got an offer from Death Metal band FLESHCRAWL, which he couldn’t resist. David had been writing new song patterns, and wanted to play the stuff with his former band buddies. Then there was the opportunity to play on the “Bang For Children” festival, together with well known bands such as DORO, AXXIS or MADOG, and the four wanted to take the chance and reunited. Since that it´s going straight uphill with Spellbound, and there was a very good chemistry inside the band. In the same year a new demo was recorded (Violent Forces), which was much more technical and more thrash elements were used than with anything before. Old-School Thrash ala EXODUS / SLAYER is much more dominant now, with dirty melodic vocals and even a skillful modern touch. Because there almost aren´t any new bands out of this genre, which once was so huge, Spellbound only got good critics on their live gigs, and convinced with their authentic behaviour. What has progressed out of this throughout the years is a highly explosive mixture. Thrash Metal, that combines skillful modern, progressive elements with heavy grooves, breathtaking sound-creations and traditional established Bay Area riffs.

Incoming Destiny 2005

In November 2004 the four Spellbinders went to the legendary Stage-One-Studio, in order to record their debut album ‘Incoming Destiny’ together with producer Andy Classen. This debut album perfectly reflects the work done in almost 6 years, and Andy makes those Spellbound songs sound exactly like they should: Heavy, clean and brutal.
