Fist started life as Axe in 1977 but a threatened court action by an American band of the same name forced the change.



Having built up a large fan base in the North East of England, backing most major rock bands, they released their first single NAME RANK & SERIAL NUMBER on NEAT Records. It was a moderate hit but became a cult anthem in the ranks of NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL, reaching 68 in the NATIONAL CHART and number 2 in the ALTERNATIVE CHARTS, ahead of ADAM & THE ANTS, JOY DIVISION, UB40, TEARDROP EXPLODES, MOTORHEAD, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS, PAUL YOUNG and TOYAH! The single was in every heavy metal chart for 3 months and was "SOUNDS" single of the year, nominated by GARY BUSHELL, IAN RAVENDALE, GEOFF BARTON (EDITOR) and MALCOLM DOME.



The heavy metal bubble burst however, and all major labels shed many bands and FIST was a casualty. The band ended in 1984.




Reformed in 2001 and still based in the North East of England, FIST have recently played gigs with such names as GRAHAM BONNET and BUDGIE. They also played a blinder at the HEADBANGER´S OPEN AIR FESTIVAL in Germany. Thanks to everyone that made contact to say FIST at HOA was gig of the year 2004.
