The new album of Detroit-based THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER turned out to be of the best Death Metal-releases released this year. Guitar-hero Brian is obviously vey proud of it and answered the questions with a good sense of humor too. InterviewYour new album "nocturnal" surprised me by its sheer brutality - you seem
to had add a much much more power into the songs and your sound lately. And with
"Deathmask Divine" you wrote one of the best songs in 2007. Did you realize
during the songwriting and recording process that the album become such a
blast?

We weren´t aware that it would come out sounding as well as it did. We knew when we were coming up with the songs that they were definitely some of the most pissed, straight to your throat shit we´ve ever done. It was awesome to see how our ideas came into realization from the practice space to the studie.

What´s your favourite track on it?

Me personally, i really dig "Climatic Degradation". I don´t know, it´s just balls to the wall from start to finish.

Where do you see differences, improvements and similarities to it´s
predecessor "Miasma"? Is there a field where the band
improved very much?

I think we were able to write much more focussed material this time around. We really wanted to cut out any unnecessary fat in our material. As far as production goes, we are much happier this time around. Some of the production aspects of Miasma were just too limiting to the nature of the songs.

How long did you work on the songs? Is it easy for you to compose a new
song?

Some songs were very easy to write and were written within a couple of sittings. Other songs were more difficult to write and required us to keep coming back to them till it was right and finished. For the most part, the album was written over the course of two months.

Where did you record the album? Was it a smooth recording session?

We tracked at Trax East Studios with Eric Rachael and mixed at Audio Hammer Studios with Jason Suecof. It was actually a very smooth experience. Eric really helps set a tone for a relaxed work enviroment and Jason smokes your brains out and then takes you on a cosmic mixing journey.

Do you enjoy working in a studio?

I guess, there are probably ten thousand things i´d rather be doing though.

You´re a touring-happy band and have been on the roads for many months
this year. What had been the best moment or the best show this year? Do
remember the party.san festival (second weekend of august) in germany, with
its shitty weather and all the mud?

Of course i remember party.san festival aka world of mudd. I think my favorite show this year so far was playing in our home town of Detroit. We played pretty well and the crowd was awesome. we also had a chance to try some new songs out on them and it went great.

What are your touring plans for the rest of this year?

We leave for Indonesia in a couple of weeks, that should be exciting. Right after that we go to Australia and New Zealand with our close friends in Cephalic Carnage. Then after that We are heading back to mainland Europe for a headliner featuring Job For a Cowboy and The Red Chord.

Do you sometimes want to take a step back and take off touring for like
six months or so?

Not really at all. I would become quite bored and depressed. I need to travel and play.

Which albums impressed you most during this year?

I´ve been trying to bang my head off to the new Behemoth. That shit´s pretty tight mang.

You´re one of the few bands that is accepted by both the metal and the
hardcore-scene. Do you have a clue how you managed to become so?

I think it´s because we rule and no matter who you are, you´re probably gonna dig it. Unless you have advanced downs syndrome.
