Bassist/vocalist John Karnes first united with guitarist Todd Czepek and drummer Eric Czepek back in 1991 under the banner of Nostradamus. This union only lasted six months, producing a four-song rehearsal demo that was never released.

Todd and John joined forces again in 1993 to form a band that would finally satisfy their rabid metal needs. Thus, in the spring of 1994, SCEPTER was officially born. With drummer Dave Gipson, John and Todd entered the studio in the Winter of 1994 and recorded their now-legendary debut release, UP THY ASS. This four assault E.P. presented a fresh yet familiar outlook on metal that gained the allegiance of fans and critics worldwide. Original Nostradamus drummer Eric retumed in 1995 and the three went to work immediately. 1996 brought forth SCEPTER‘s second offering, METAL SUPREMACY. This release has also been met with global acclaim over the band‘s straightforward brand of heavy, crunching, fucking metal.

One person particularly captivated by SCEPTER‘s uncompromising metal style was Volker Schwechheimer, the main man in charge of Germany‘s Merciless Records. Having been into the band since the UP THY ASS days, Merciless offered to press the METAL SUPREMACY mini-CD onto 7-inch picture disc. The result was fantastic! Limited to 500 pieces, it has already become a classic metal collectors item. It was only natural that Merciless Records would offer SCEPTER a full-fledged record deal. The band accepted and went into the studio in the Summer of 1998. At long last SCEPTER finally unleashes their first full-length metal masterpiece, I‘M GONG TO HELL, giving strength to the strong and laying waste to the weak!

Metal is more than merely killer fucking music. Metal is an all-powerful force unto itself that permaetes every action in our lives. To SCEPTER. metal is the musical and attitudinal culmination of the best death, thrash, black, hard rock and heavy metal styles have to offer. Metal has no restrictions other than that of honesty, integrity and resolve. Once those qualities are mastered, power, honor and glory will surely follow. SCEPTER feels that being a "METAL" band is the ultimate equalizer. Being "true" and/or "elite" is for those people who have something to prove to others. REAL metalheads merely exist and do their bidding among die masses as they please. Bands should play whatever they feel is right for themselves, The real metal bands of die world will always separate themselves from the wimps by what they say and what they play. Metal bands and fans alike have evolved beyond the purity of the old days, but when metal truly comes from the heart; the spirit of die old gods will forever endure.
