Band:

Downfall

BiografieDOWNFALL was formed in 1998, when Timo Eskelinen and Kalle Tulonen joined forces in order to make experimental metal music. They first did some crossover metal tunes with lots of synths and machine rhythms. After a while they however thought ”Fuck the machines!” and started to create more heavier and traditional style of metal music. Drumloops and synth sounds were changed to Kalle´s agressive drumming and tight riffwork, sweet and sorrow melodies of guitarists Timo and Hannu. There are still some additional keyboard sections in our music, but they are only used to bring some depth in the atmosphere. The lowest frequencies of our wall of sound are made by Dmitry Martynoff, who joined the band in 1999 along with the vocalist Jani Peippo, who had performed the vocal parts also in our very first experiments.

With this kick-ass line-up we started to write songs and rehearse for the future. The first live performance was thrown in Virrat, supporting the famous power metallers ”Sonata Arctica”. In spring 2000 we recorded a five-piece EP in Studio Watercastle Jyväskylä. This self-financed and produced recording was made in five days, so it ended up to be a pure Rock ´n Roll act with nothing unnecessary in it. Later in spring, as we had send the EP to all potential metal labels, it drawed the attention of Low Frequency Records, who signed us afterwards.

In 2001, along with throwing gigs around southern Finland, we wrote new songs for the forthcoming full-lenght CD. Debut album "My Last Prayer” was recorded and mixed February 2002 at Studio Watercastle, Jyväskylä. It was released 25.05.2002 in Finland through LFR, but the distribution of the album was given to BMG Finland. My last Prayer was licensed in Russia, CIS and Baltic states by CD-Maximum ltd. CD-Maximum´s release contains "Dark Parade EP" as bonus tracks. “My Last Prayer” is also available in Japan (Sounholic), USA (The End Records) and Canada (Plastic Heads).

The debut album itself contains 10 hard rock/metal songs, that have been described as “dark melodic rock metal”, but there is more to it than normal Scandinavian, almost cliche-like-melancoly and darkness. Though every song has it’s own chief point that makes the song interesting – weither it is a crunchy guitar riff, frequent drum pattern or a deep synth melody - it all comes down to the oldest saying of the industry: “Keep It Simple Stupid”. Although “My Last Prayer” contains almost proge like rythms, the main theme of the album is a simple and straight forward hard rock.

In Summer 2002, it was time to move slightly towards a different direction, by modifying the Downfall line-up with a new drummer Timo Kemppainen (ex-Diablo). He brings the drum work to a next level with his club-you-to-death attitude and superspeed drumfills. We made some gigs at the end of 2002 with our new drummer and saw that everything is working great and we can consentrate writing new songs and having gigs relivedly knowing that Downfall is tougher than ever before.

2003 will be an eventfull year to Downfall: 2nd album will be recorded sometime (TBA) in 2003. We are also trying to do some touring outside Finland, Central Europe possibly, which will be first time for Downfall to play outside Finland. Next album will follow the path of the first but sounds will be lifted 90 degrees up with more carefull studiowork and a possible externall producer.

My Last Prayer - Cover
Nach diversen Sampler-Beiträgen und einer MCD brachten diese Skandinavier ihr echtes Debüt bereits 2002 auf den Markt. Nach Deutschland kommt es aber erst jetzt über die "Nibelungen".
