Omnium Gatherum

BiografieOMNIUM GATHERUM was formed somewhere in time 1995-96 by the guitarist M.Vanhala & the vocalist / guitarist O.Lappalainen. Soon more musicians joined the crew, and after a year of hard training and songwriting we recorded our first demotape "Forbidden Decay" in the spring of -97. The tape was distributed only to friends and local heavydudes as we weren´t satisfied in it at all ´cause of a shitty 4-tracker production. After this, Janne Markkanen (bass) and Harri Pikka (guitar) came along to play their parts. Following recording sessions were the OG cd-ep in -98 (recorded at our rehearsal place, HellHole) and "Gardens, Temples?this Hell!" in -99, recorded at local AK-sound studio. Especially "Gardens.."got much positive feedback from magazines, radio stations, and from some companies too, but no good record deals were offered.

As the years passed by, still some line-up changes were done, and so J.Pikka joined the mob as a drummer and T.Pekkola as a session keyboardist. The effort to record our fourth demo was a failure at first, due to poor sound quality and lack of proper equipment. Then ways departed with the old vocalist Lappalainen during the fall of 2000, and by the end of the year A.Filppu was called in to do the vocal parts for the forthcoming demo. This eventually led into his permanent stay in the band as things seemed to work out well.

"Wastrel" demo´01 was recorded without any expenses in the winter-spring of 2001 at local Pumppulaitos studio, and was released on the 18th of May. It brought us words of praise like its predecessor, with the review in Terrorizer summing it up quite nicely: "?there is a sense of something special happening here. Technically the sextet have got it all worked out, but if I could apply the word ´beautiful´ to metal songs then I would do so here because they are as complete as would be expected from any top class album."

At the time T.Pekkola was replaced by M.Pennanen as a session keyboardist. A new and growing label RAGE OF ACHILLES offered us a deal that sounded good and after signing it we were sent straight to the Sonic Pump studios in late December to re-record "Wastrel" to be released as a debut MCD. The mcd was recorded and produced by Nino Laurenne and the recording and mixing were done in 6 days. Mastering was done in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Mastering Room. The title was changed to "Steal the light" so that no one would mistake it for the demo, but it certainly suffered the same fate when it comes to delay; it came out on the 2nd of September.

In August 15th we entered the Sonic Pump studios again to record our first full-lenght album called "Spirits and August Light", with Nino Laurenne. This time we had 14 days to complete the recording and mixing. Mastering was done at the Finnvox studios, Helsinki. "Spirits and August Light" release date is set to March, 2003.

We are an omnium-gatherum of old school heavy metal, melodic death and various kinds of thrash / rässi with lots of gut-spilling guilt, cursing oneself as well as pitying this world while warming fingers up near the fires of das ungeheure. Teutonic rage obviously has to shake its hands with a certain amount of self-irony in order to make itself heard at all these days; unless you can get your helicockter on, the whole of our sound of music may pass through misunderstood.

Songwriter Vanhala gets his kicks from traditional bands like Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne, Swedish death classics as At the Gates etc., more atmospheric bands like Katatonia and Anathema, and of course, late Chuck Schuldiner´s Death. As for Filppu, he has taken his boots down from the attic after letting them rot there for years. It´s a hard struggle to hide the middle-fingers, and every now and then when it succeeds, Perfect Synchronicity leaves her trademarks to the words with some odd spirits and good bullshit --just in case if there are any ass-headed dogs who want to read and then to wipe something clean.

Mit „New World Shadows” hatten OMNIUM GATHERUM 2011 ein ganz passables Album hingelegt, das die Band stark vom Düstermetal finnischer Machart geprägt zeigte.
