Band:

Katagory V

BiografieOf all the places for a progressive/power metal band to call home…

Katagory V formed up in late 1999 in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah. It all began as a simple acoustic jam in co-founder/bassist Dustin Mitchell’s apartment, along with other co-founder/Guitarist Curtis Morrell and Drummer Matt Suiter. This small gathering turned out to be the beginning nucleus of one of the most prominent metal bands to ever come out of Utah, or quite possibly the ONLY metal band to come from the former winter Olympic state.

Based on that initial meeting, Matt, Curtis and Dustin began constructing original material through the spring and summer of 2000 at Streamline Recording Studios, located behind Curtis’s house. During this time they acquired a second guitarist by the name of Ryan Taylor who had played in a band with Curtis a few years prior. It was their goal to create a band that played in a traditional power metal style with odd meter time signatures, tempos and melodic vocal point while implementing progressive rock overtones.

After writing a few original songs, they went in search of a vocalist that would be able to carry out the demanding vocal chores. It wasn’t long that they enlisted a local vocal veteran by the name of Lynn Allers. Lynn added the finishing touch to a now complete Katagory V, which the band would named itself after finding out that the correct spelling of the name was being used by six other bands in the USA alone.

The band commenced recording their debut “Present Day” in late 2000 and would not wrap up until the middle of Summer of 2001. The recording process was hampered by other recording acts utilizing the studio, financial disarray, and technical woes which caused a long delay in the finishing of “Present Day”. After the eventual completion of the album Katagory V began shopping record labels, and quickly gained interest by some, most of which were located overseas. During this time Katagory V would sign a distribution deal with Lance King (Balance of Power vocalist) via Nightmare Records for the “Present Day” album, which would make Katagory V’s music available online, and in music stores across the U.S. and overseas.

In the year to come, Katagory V would see their share of really good reviews, interviews, compilation CD’s and gigs in the attempt to bring their music to the Heavy Metal masses. It would also see the departure of guitarist Ryan Taylor, who had left due to personal obligations outside of the band.

Narrowed down to a four piece, Curtis, Dustin, Matt and Lynn went back into the studio for pre-production during March of 2002 and recorded as many ideas as possible with the idea of making a template for the next album, and taking the time to be more detailed and in depth with the song writing. May 2002 would see the band officially start the recording process of their follow-up to “Present Day” which the band is predicting to be a much more refined album in terms of song writing and production as well as consisting of a few added surprises.
