Band:

Face Tomorrow

BiografieThis is a story all about passion, intensity and honesty. About five people who would give their lives for what they believe in. FACE TOMORROW is not about getting famous and not about following the latest trend. In a musical landscape clouded by fake emotions, prefab crap and money-keen puppets on strings, Face Tomorrow could be the silver lining.

“With hard work, being dedicated to what we believe in, playing everywhere we can, we’re trying to reach more and more people every time. By giving shows with a heart, by writing songs with a heart and by making records with a heart.”, explains guitarplayer Aart Face Tomorrow’s leitmotif.

And it shows, after having played over 500 shows over the last years, Face Tomorrow can undoubtedly be called one of Holland´s most successful alternative bands. The band’s been around since 1997, but after some demo’s their first real sign of life was a self-released EP called ‘Live The Dream’ in 2001 which was sold out in a couple of months. The band started playing numerous shows and won the audience award at the GPNL 2001, the biggest and most prestigious competition for bands in the Netherlands and caught the attention of Dutch indie label Reflections Records.

The release of ‘For who you are’, released June 2002 on Reflections Records, was a perfect mixture of emotion, intensity, passion, power and melody. The record was a collection of 12 perfectly structured songs with a highly addictive sound ranging from utter silence to heavy dragging outbursts and aggressive noise blasts. Whilst the band flips around the musical landscape, not caring who they upset along the way, the unprecedented passionate vocals are impossible to escape from. With contemplative lyrics dealing with all the features of the emotional spectrum, wrapped up in memorable melodies and heart-broken explosions, the album grabs you by the throat and just wouldn’t let go.

‘For Who You Are’ got raving reviews, and the single ´Worth the Wait´ got airplay all over Europe. It entered the Rockcharts at number 1 on music station The Box and spent weeks in several charts like Kink FM´s Outlaw 41. Face Tomorrow won an Essent Award, did an infamous ‘2 Meter Sessie’ on national television and they went on to play almost all major festivals (Metropolis NL, Lowlands NL, Groezrock BE, Bevrijdingsfestival Rotterdam + Wageningen NL, Suikerrock BE, Goodlife fest BE, Riotfest BE etc.) and stages in The Netherlands and Belgium, building up an impressive reputation for their intense and electrifying live shows. But also the rest of Europe got notice pretty fast. American band AFI took them along on their UK tour where Face Tomorrow played a sold out London Astoria at the NME Awards and did several successful tours throughout Europe.

In 2004 FT released a new album entitled ‘The closer you get’ and a single and music video for the song ‘Sign Up’. Although the expectations had ran high, Face Tomorrow had really surpassed themselves. Exhibiting a coherency, intensity and emotional depth that is at times breathtaking, ‘The Closer You Get’ is an atmospherically and honest monument of extremes, hooks, melodies and rock. Moving from wistful nostalgia through unguarded introspection, to impotent rage through helpless despair, ´The Closer You Get´ is in essence an attempt at resolution.

“I think we’ve managed to convey a wide musical spectrum on this record, but that we were able to press our own stamp on it even more. The songs are more balanced, the dynamics are better and all the pieces just fit together the way we wanted.”, says singer Jelle. Guitarplayer Marc adds: “It’s such a cliché, but I truly think we matured and made a serious and grown-up record. We’ve learned to work with the possibilities of the studio much better to add a specific feeling and atmosphere to the songs. By using backing vocals and additional instruments we were able to give the songs more depth and eventually this record is way more spherical and thought through. It has more contrast but is also more an entirety. We can’t wait to perform the songs live!”

And the band didn’t need to wait long for that. The release of ‘The closer you get’ in may 2004 was followed by an extensive promotour throughout The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, The United Kingdom, France, Austria etc. which lasted through till September 2005. Playing numerous clubs and festivals like Wantijpop (NL), Plein Open (NL), Waterpop (NL), Ringfest (GER), Pukkelpop (BE), Noorderslag (NL), Paaspop (NL), Bevrijdingsfestival Zwolle (NL), Breda Barst (NL), Pressure fest (GER), Bochum Total (GER), Popkomm (GER) and CMJ (US).

Due to Face Tomorrow’s strong underground fanbase, the first pressing (3000) of ‘The Closer You Get’ was gone within a week after it’s release! The media hype really caught on as well. The band was featured in magazines like Oor, Fret, Live XS, Kerrang, Westzeit, Uncle Sally’s, Big Cheese Magazine and many others, plus they appeared on for instance MTV and 3FM and many other tv and radio stations. After the initial comparisons ranging from bands like At the Drive-In to Radiohead and from Tool to Boy Sets Fire, it was clear Face Tomorrow had a unique sound and became the basis for comparison themselves. Face Tomorrow released two singles of the record for ‘Sign Up’ and ‘My World Within’ , which got aired all over Europe, for instance on Studio Brussel, 3FM, The Box, MTV, Scuzz TV, Onyx, TMF, MTV 2, Kerrang TV and entered (and topped) several charts like Kink FM’s Outlaw 41. At the end of 2004 Face Tomorrow got an award for Best Dutch Live Act from Kink FM/Live XS and the record was chosen by the VPRO as one of the best Dutch Albums of the Year.

At the beginning of 2005 a vinyl version of ‘The Closer You Get’ was released on the band’s own Face Tomorrow Records and they started working on their first DVD project for which they recorded a show in a packed Nighttown theatre in their hometown Rotterdam. This DVD was released in August 2005 when the band played for the second time at the Lowlands festival and got extensive mediacoverage throughout Europe. They went on to do their first US tour in September and after that the band took some time off from playing live to write and record a new record.
