Biografie
Das Thrash-Metal-Commando DARKNESS stammt aus Essen – Altenessen, neben der Bay Area die kreativste Keimzelle der Thrash Welle in den 1980er Jahren.
1984 gegründet macht sich die Formation mit den Demos „Evil Curse“, „Titanic War“ und „Spawn oft the Dark One“ einen Namen. In den Jahren 1987-1989 veröffentlicht DARKNESS drei Alben.
Das erste Album „Death Squad“ gilt als Thrash-Klassiker und hat den Kultstatus von DARKNESS begründet, der bis heute Bestand hat und Thrash Musiker in der ganzen Welt beeinflusst.
Im Jahr 1991 wird es ruhiger um die Band, 1998 stirbt tragischer-weise Sänger Olli.
Lacky und Arnd, zwei Mitglieder der ersten Stunden, beleben 2004 die Thrash Guerilla wieder.
2005 werden die drei Alben „Death Squad“, „Defenders of Justice“ und „Conclusion & Revival“ wieder veröffentlicht. Zudem kommt mit „Bocholt Live Squad“ eine offizielle Konzertaufnahme vom 14.05.1987 im CD-Format auf dem Markt.
Die längst vergriffene 3-Fach Vinylbox „The Demos“ aus dem Jahr 2008 beinhaltet einen Live Mitschnitt vom „Keep it True“ Festival 2006, alle Demoaufnahmen und umfangreiches Bonusmaterial.
Ende 2010 veröffentlichten die Musiker, die sonst unter dem Banner „Eure Erben“ unterwegs waren, das erste mal auch wieder ein Album unter dem Namen DARKNESS.
Da die Nachfrage nicht abreißt, werden zum jeweils 25-jährigen Jubiläum die Alben „Death Squad“ und „Defenders of Justice“ noch einmal auf Vinyl veröffentlicht.
Wie bei vielen Veteranen des Metal dreht sich auch bei DARKNESS das Besetzungskarussel.
Lacky und Arnd, die Konstanten der Band, machen sich auf die Suche nach einer stabilen Besetzung für ein Comeback. Den Gitarristen Meik finden Sie bereits 2013.
Lee bekommt von Arnd Ende 2014 das Mikrofon übergeben, der sich fortan ausschließlich auf die Gitarre und Backgrounds konzentriert. 2015 übernimmt Dirk den Bass von Christian „Spessy“ Gießler, der durch seinen Hauptberuf bei Kreator keine Zeit mehr hat, bei DARKNESS mitzumischen.
Nach dem „Keep it True“, aber insbesondere seit 2014, spielen DARKNESS auf namenhaften Festivals wie dem „Turock Open Air“, „Obscene Extreme“ oder dem „Ruhrpott Metal Meeting“. Auch bei zahlreichen Clubshows wird weltweit die Oldschool Keule geschwungen und bewiesen, wofür die Band steht: Thrash der alten Schule - brachial, schnell, kompromisslos und gemein.
Mit dem Album „The Gasoline Solution“ kam Oktober 2016 ein echter, vielgelobter Nachfolger der beiden Klassiker „Death Squad“ und „Defenders of Justice“ auf dem Markt.
Genau 2 Jahre nach dem Comeback Album stellten Darkness im Oktober 2018 mit der aktuellen Scheibe „First Class Violence“ eindrucksvoll klar, dass auch über 30 Jahre später der wütende Thrash immer noch aus Altenessen kommt.

The story so far!
The thrash-metal-command DARKNESS comes from the „Ruhrgebiet“ in Germany, one of the most creative areas for thrash metal in the 1980s besides the bay-area around San Francisco.
The band was founded in 1984 and made itself a name with the demo tapes „The Evil Curse“, „Titanic War“ and „Spawn Of The Dark One“. In the years 1987 to 1989 three albums were released. The first album DEATH SQUAD is regarded as thrash-classic, it influenced thrash musicians and is known for this still today.
In 1999 DARKNESS began to wind down, in 1999 singer Olli died.
In 2004 Lacky and Arnd, two of the original members, reanimated the thrash-guerilla.
The albums “Death Squad“, “Defenders Of Justice“ und “Conclusion & Revival“ were re-released in 2005. In addition to that the CD “Bocholt Live Squad” was published, a live recording from May, 17th 1987.
Further on a three vinyl box named “The Demos” was released in 2008, including the demo tapes, the live recording of the “Keep it true“– festival gig of 2006 and extensive bonus material.
Lacky and Arnd played as „Eure Erben“ until 2010, then the musicians released a new album under the name of DARKNESS.
On the occasion of the 25th release of the first album and due to the great demand for DARKNESS the albums „Death Squad“ and „Defenders of Justice“ were released a third time.
The line up of the band changed many times and Lacky and Arnd, the constants of the band, were looking for a solid cast for a comeback. In 2013 axeman Meik joined the band.
In the end of 2014 Lee joined the band as singer while Arnd focussed on the guitar and backings from then on. In 2015 Dirk took the part as bass-player from Christian „Speesy“ Gießler who had to give up DARKNESS for his main job at KREATOR.
Since the „Keep it true“ Festival but in particular since 2014 DARKNESS played numerous of shows at notable festivals and in clubs across Europe.
The band still proofs what they stand for: Oldschool Teutonic Thrash – brute, fast, tough-minded and mean.
The comeback Album„The Gasoline Solution“, released in 2016, is going to be a real follower of the two classics „Death Squad“ and „Defenders of Justice“.
