Band:

Fake Moss

BiografieInitially [1996-1999]:
Erik Johnsson (vocals and guitars), Dag Nemeth (drums) and Torkel Jelvinger (bass guitar) started their musical experiments during their respective time off from studying art, film and design. Heavily influenced not only by the finer arts, but also by bands like Lords of the New Church, The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Doors, they created original, intellectual and very arty music. Being a big fan of the British waif Kate Moss, bass player Torkel suggested "Fake Moss" as a good name for the band, and so - in 1996 - it all began.

The trio grew into being a quartet in 1997, when film student Maria Weimer was brought in as a keyboard player. The impact was immediately noticeable. As a big fan of The Cure, Joy Division and New Order, she brought an epic, dark and depressive vibe to the music of Fake Moss.

In 1999 Torkel Jelvinger left the band in order to pursue and further develop his artistic talent as a designer, and was replaced by Valdemar Asp (now in Strip Music, among others). At this time - due to extensive gigging - the band had started drawing attention to themselves by some branches of the media, as well as a few record companies.

Altered [2000-2001]:

In 2000, a live version of the song 2001 was recorded at a concert for the compilation-CD "Come out and play". The show was attended by Lars Tengroth from Playground Music and he ended up slightly blown away by the perfomance. Shortly afterwards Fake Moss were recording demos for the afore mentioned label. The expected co-operation sadly ended in nothing, except for two demo-songs: "It´s you against the city tonight" and "Too close to myself".

After finishing these sessions, 50% of the band was replaced. Johan Sjöblom entered the configuration after his previous band [prune.] split, replacing 6 strings with 4 as the new bass player of Fake Moss (he was also Erik´s neighbor prior to these events). A new drummer took over the sticks when Dag Nemeth left them: the hard-hitting musical vagabond Kim Weider.

The morph resulted in big things. With a tighter rythm section the band now developed in a harder direction; old songs received new life and new harder songs were added. All without compromising the originallity or the depths of either the lyrics or the compositions.

EP [2001-2002]:

In 2002, Johan Sjöblom called D. Kaufeldt (independent producer and owner of the small record label Ad Inexplorata) asking him for a recording session. Kaufeldt accepted and soon the band were recording two new songs in their rehearsal room - "She´s smashing the room again" and "Addiction". Due to the extraordinary quality of the songs, Ad Inexplorata desperately wanted them released on it´s twang label. The band accepted and the two new recordings - together with the two demos from the Playground-sessions - were released on September 29th, 2002. Torkel Jelvinger was brought back in, now responsible for the visual representation of Fake Moss.

The EP "She´s smashing the room again" received great reviews and was amongst other things given the epithet "a future indie classic". It reached number 10 on the Nordic Alternative Charts, and an older copy of the two Playground recordings reached NME, who appointed it one of the "Demo´s of the year".

The EP sold out quickly, and in November 2002 the team started working again, now on the debut full length CD.

It´s you against the city tonight [2003-2004]:

After a slow start, a slightly faster middle and a rather slow ending, the band finished the recording of their first full length CD in october 2003.During the recording process Ad Inexplorata signed an exclusive deal for Fake Moss with Sound Pollutions Ultrachrome label, leaving the mentioned label completely in charge of distribution and promotion.

This ment the band now had decent backing and were to see their new album released not only in sweden, but in the entire EU.

The album was slightly mastered by MVS and released in February 2004. An incredibly crowded release party was followed by the obligatory raving reviews (as well as a couple of not so raving ones!), video shoots, interviews.. and the band played on.
