Band:

Apocryphal Voice

BiografieWHAT KIND OF FILTHY ROOTS SPAWNED THIS BAND?

The history of Apocryphal Voice is not yet very long. It began in 1999 from the plain urge to publish the music I had began to create while the old band me and Ville were part of (Ville was the drummer, and I played the bass and wrote lyrics), was in motivational crisis and getting closer to the end. When music starts flowing from within, there isn´t and shouldn´t be any stopping it. I felt that the old band, that played conventional melodic Dark Metal, was restricting me, and I wanted to quit. That forced the other members to face the question: "Should we keep going on?" And so that band was buried. (For good? - I cannot say.) It turned out that from those members only Ville had enough motivation for this new thing. What began as a project of me and Ville, escalated and we decided to make a reach for a deal. During the first year, more and more songs (in varying styles, we weren´t very profiled yet at this point) were created rather easily. Actually, coming up with the bandname was one of the most difficult things we have had to do for this band.

FIRST REAL STUDIO SESSION, "THE SICKENING", AND THE LONG SILENCE AFTER IT

Even though we rehearsed the whole summer 2000, the date when the studio (for this demo) would be available for us was delayed over and over again. And since Ville had to move to another town by the end of summer, we could not rehearse for three months before entering the studio (which finally happened in late November). This took a bit accuracy and efficiency out of our performace. But all in all, it doesn´t bother one bit, for such strong stuff we had brought into existence. Proud as hell then, and ...well, fairly proud today. (In my opinion, only the third track "Sleeping in Tar" has failed to withstand time.)

Good, now we only had to send the demo in interesting places around the globe and sit back waiting for glorious offers pouring in from major record labels after another. Right? Not exactly. Long silence fell upon us, with only occasional rejecting answers from couple of labels. Tired of waiting I was also lured to compose songs for and to play in completely other projects. These were:

- A death metal act, which began strongly in summer 2001 but for some reasons it just stayed on that level, never really going anywhere.

- A two-piece black metal project Ex Caliga with the base idea of recreating some of the atmosphere and magick of the early 90´s. I appear in that band under the pseudonym Kasdaye. The release called "First Visions" has just been released by Millenium Metal (a sublabel of Solistitium Records).

Apocryphal Voice was never forgotten, but put in a very passive status until out of the blue in summer 2002 came an enthusiastic signing offer from English label Rage of Achilles. And a MCD release of "The Sickening" came to be in summer 2003.

A NEW SLAP IN THE FACE BY REALITY

Meanwhile, after a slight depression that had lasted from autumn 2002, I finally got to the inspired state of mind and began composing new songs for the upcoming full-lenght album. I quickly put together a set of songs enough to make a decent album. Most of the riffs I used came from era between 2001 and 2003, from the massive riff library that I had been saving ideas into during that time. The new material turned out to be slower and more straight-to-the-point. Yet drawing emotional intensity from good old Voice dischords. Some of the songs could almost be described as depressive doom.

But before this, first bad news started arriving from the label; The sales of "The Sickening" had been extremely low. The label boss said it resulted from magazines being reluctant to review or support the MCD and distros being reluctant to distribute it. So many people found it too weird music to work with or understand. I don´t get this, we´re not actually the weirdest band on the planet, far from it. But the thing was that "The Sickening" flopped.

Nevertheless, as I said, I composed the album without any thought for those trendy idiots. I made a preliminary demo on my computer on Cool Edit Pro, so that Ville could learn the song structures. I also sent it to the label boss, so that he could check out the new material before we would enter studio. This was the point where the label lost all their belief. They had already lost money on commercial failure of the MCD, and thought this new album would even harder to promote, and saw it as a sure loss of more money. Unwilling to show green light on the album they asked us if we´d be okay with nullification of the original contract. It wasn´t a fun place to be, but other option would have been being stuck for two albums with a label reluctant of investing anything in us. So with our signatures, the contract was made null and void.

A NEW BEGINNING, SAME OLD ANGST

After the information about our break-up with Rage Of Achilles was given out through this very website, some people got interested in us. We sent this very same preliminary demo to Appease Me and got offered a contract with support and co-operation with Candlelight. No more sceptics for Apocryphal Voice; Candlelight showed green light because they fully trust the artistic taste of Appease Me. Stay tuned for what will happen with our upcoming album "Stilltrapped"...

Stilltrapped - Cover
Dass Finnen gerne mal depressiv und düster durch die Welt laufen, dürfte allgemein bekannt sein. Aber was APOCRYPHAL VOICE hier abziehen, hat weder mit dem einen, noch mit dem anderen etwas zu tun.
