Since this is your first interview with Metal-Inside could you
give us a short introduction to Supersuckers?
Well, we were born among the cactus and dust that is Tucson, Arizona in 1988 with the mission of becoming the most kick-ass rockīnīroll band you ever did see. And thatīs exactly what we became. In what ways do you fit in the classical rockīnīroll cliché? In which ways you donīt?Oh, I dunno... We like to play with the stereotypes that fit all the rock cliches - the liquor, the women, the killing - yet we donīt take it all that seriously. Itīs all a little bit of a goof for us, I guess. What record started the spark of rockīnīroll in you?"Get The Knack" by The Knack. That started this whole ride for me! What can you tell us about the new E.P. "Paid"?That itīs easily as awesome as "Get The Knack" and you need it in your life. Was "Breaking Honeyīs Heart" written for someone special?Yes. Wouldnīt you think a song like that would have to be? In your press infos you say that you want to release first the singles, than the E.P.s and after a few of those a normal record with some of the songs on the E.P.s plus a few new recordings. Even if this is how it was done in the fifties, donīt you think people nowadays might understand as simply another method to make more money by forcing the fans to buy songs they already own?Weīre not forcing anyone to do anything they donīt want to do. Weīre just making and releasing music the way we want to do it. Thatīs all. Weīre not trying to milk the public of their hard earned cash. Sticking with the nasty money topic: in Germany some of your records are sold for a much higher price than for example in your official webshop. Can you of a reason why?I would venture to guess that itīs because they were import records. Our distribution in Germany has been spotty at best and that, unfortunately, makes for some expensive records over there. Just buy from our webstore and all will be good! In the last two years you have release two records labelled īInstant Live#. Will you continue this series?Yeah, probably. Itīs a cool thing to get to do. They record a show and then itīs available right at the end of the night to the people who were there - pretty cool. In what ways will the īevil powers of rockīnīrollī affect the listener? In all the right ways, I hope. In which country do you never want to tour again or which country was the worst to tour in?Weīve been real lucky as far as that goes. There isnīt really a place that weīve been to that was so bad we never wanted to return. Germany has come close but not as close as France! With all your extensive touring there must be some stories worth sharing with our readers.Yes there are... Who are your heroes from the beginning of rockīnīroll?Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, John Fogerty, Lemmy... In 2001 you have started your own label Mid-Fi Recordings. In what positive ways has this influenced your musical career? Are there negative side-effects, as well?Itīs been a great chance for us to put out whatever we want, whenever we want. Thereīs no one telling us, "Hey now, thatīs not gonna work" Itīs just us, making all the decisions ourselves, and thatīs been great. The downside is purely financial - we have to find creative ways to pay for all these projects, which we always manage to do, but itīs hard at times. Your biography mentions that your songs are quite often played at snowboarding events and the like. Do you engage in these kind of sports or in any kind of sports yourselves?Yeah, we do a little snowboarding, some of us play a little golf, poker (Is that a sport now?) By throwing a coin you decided to head for Seattle in 1989 shortly before the big grunge wave. How have you experienced this time? How has it affected you and your music? It was a great time to be in Seattle. To see these bands that you knew get all that attention was awesome. Of course we wish that we wouldīve gotten more of it too, but to see that is was possible had a very positive effect on us. Musically speaking, it didnīt really change what we did too much, maybe to the detriment of our wallets, but we always did things our own way. Still do. Your music comprises quite some country elements. What would be your favourite three country records to start with listening to this kind of musical style?Willie Nelsonīs "Greatest Hits And Some That Will Be", Billy Joe Shaverīs "Restless Wind" compilation, any early Johnny Cash record featuring the Tennessee Two. Pink panties with big guns are among the coolest merchandise I have seen in the last couple years. What else can we expect?Cock rings, bongs, vibrators, you know, all the necessary stuff Tell us, what or who is...a....the good? The Supersuckers b....the bad?Internet interviews c....the ugly?Your mom What are your plans for the near future?Touring. Lotīs and lotīs of touring. And hopefully some recording when we get home. We really need to do that! (goofy) |
