BiografieI Witness first saw the light of day in late 1999, when 2 friends (Simeon and Korneel) were sitting somewhere in a deep, dark forest drinking lots and lots of booze. They were both members of the black metalband Tyranicum, but with rehearsals growing fewer and fewer, they decided to form a new band. They didn´t care about genres or those horseshit critics who think their opinion counts, they just wanted to play the music they liked. They called themselves Rex Talionis, latin for King of Revenge.And so they started off, making basic black metalsongs without the proper means or bandmembers.

New blood was needed.

This is where Miguel pops into the picture. They asked him to come to a rehearsal and jam with them. A mix of death and black metal was the result.

But more was needed.

Out of the ashes of the death metalband Abnormis came bassplayer Renzo. Almost complete, but their sound lacked strength, more ingrediënts were needed. Luckily Renzo (also Embraced by Death) was also in another black metalband called Wintermoon. Korneel joined them and got to know Guy (also Garmenhord and ex-Abnormis), also a guitarplayer. But disaster struck, Wintermoon disbanded, and the thought of Guy being second guitarplayer quickly came to mind. He joined themand brought tremendous power to the sound of the band

Things were nearly complete.

Things went along nicely, they made some songs and worked hard to get somewhere with their music. But after some time Renzo decided he wanted to focus on other things, and so Tom (ex- Fool´s desire, ex- Full Moon Negative) joined them in his place. Being a skilled bassplayer, he had no trouble learning the songs they had already written.

They changed the name of the band from Rex Talionis to I Witness, a name that´s more representable for the music they´re making, a mix of everything they like. Every member is inspired by other bands and genres, ranging from blues to jazz to metal to hardcore to punk to... you name it.

And so they were complete, every member focussed and ready to give whatever or crush whatever to get where they want to be.

There is no stopping now, no turning back, we have already given so much of ourselves.

We write about what we see, feel, smell, hear... everything.
